I want to introduce you to MATINE – a collection of handmade leather goods based in Washington, D.C. While looking for pieces with simple, clean silhouettes, Carolyn started creating her own bags and accessories when she couldn’t find what she wanted in the stores. Amazing right?? I absolutely love her story – it’s incredible, inspiring, and shows us if you don’t like something, change it. So here it is, in her own words.
I started MATINE two years ago, but I’ve been a creative, “I could make that” kind of girl for forever. In college I trained formally as an oil painter and then completed my Master’s degree in art history, so art and design in some form or fashion have always been major parts of my life. Fast forward a couple of years and while working my ‘real’ job I was craving another hands-on outlet for that creativity. At the same time I noticed myself constantly mentally editing handbags that I saw in shops or on the street, wishing the designs were cleaner and simpler. Per the usual, it occurred to me that I could just go ahead and design those kinds of pieces myself. It wasn’t a very long journey from there. Once I decided that I wanted to do the first line I picked a photo shoot date as a deadline and boom, I just went for it!
Inspiration shows up everywhere for me, most of the time I think it seeps in subconsciously without my even being aware of it. My inner painter is absorbing the colors and shapes and textures that I see everywhere, all the time, constantly—you just can’t turn that off. But more consciously these days I’m also thinking about this slow fashion movement I’ve noticed taking hold. A lot of women no longer want to buy a bunch of disposable stuff to fill their closets (myself included), instead they want to be thoughtful and collect the pieces of their wardrobe in a more meaningful, lasting way. For me, that notion is greatly inspiring and the simplicity at the heart of it provides a really intriguing challenge. I’m continually searching for that balance between function and simplicity to outlast trends and a little bit of whimsy to still feel really special.
Carolyn is generously offering Oh So Pretty readers $100 credit to her shop, so you too can own a little piece of MATINE. They’re absolutely amazing, each one is handmade with their unique, perfect imperfections. I have the Nora Wrap Clutch, and it is more beautiful in person!
